There was controversy on 40 minutes when Miccoli was awarded a free kick just outside the box, but replays suggest Rossi's pull on his shirt was inside the area. Miccoli's free kick was deflected out for a corner.

However, just before half-time Genoa had a great double chance, as Salvatore Sirigu did brilliantly to beat away both Raffaele Palladino's snapshot and the Rossi follow-up from close range.

Genoa threw on Hernan Crespo and Giuseppe Sculli, while Abel Hernandez came in for the home side. Sirigu had his palms stung by a Crespo snapshot at the near post, while Scarpi smothered a Hernandez effort.

Genoa went close when a Rodrigo Palacio ball flashed across the face of goal, but both Sculli and Crespo were inches away from making contact in the six-yard box. Moments later Scarpi had his gloves stung by a Simplicio screamer from 20 metres.
